Manitou and The Great War

June 29 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

“Manitou and The Great War: Eber Duclo, Franz Ferdinand, and the Tank on Top of Pikes Peak”

A presentation by Colonel Matt Cavanaugh, author and contributor to The Gazette.

World War I shaped Manitou Springs in many ways, and some are hidden in plain sight. What’s the story behind the statue atop that 20-ton boulder in Memorial Park? Is it true that the yet-to-be-assassinated archduke that triggered the conflict stayed in Manitou? Why did the US Army send a tank mission to the top of Pikes Peak in 1919? And what was Memorial Day like back then?
